Pennsylvania Genealogical Research Facilities |
|||
This is a list of the research facilities in Pennsylvania that I have used (unless noted), along with some personal comments and impressions of the facility. The list is far from being a complete list of all available facilities, as Pennsylvania is very rich in historical libraries. I'll add more as I visit them. |

Berks County | |||
Historical Society of Berks Co | Excellent collection of church and cemetery records, indexed on a computer system for easy location.
Berks Co Genealogical Society | Limited hours. A nice complement to the Historical Society library (above). Vertical Family files. Broad in subject matter.
Berks County Recorder of Deeds Register of Wills |
Both at the Berks County Services Center. Particularly useful is the online search capability by the Register of Wills. View actual Estate Files here.
Tulpehocken Settlement Historical Society | Limited hours. A specialized library relating to the Tulpehocken area. Strong in local family histories and historical books about the area.
Lancaster County | |||
Lancaster County Historical Society | Good collection of cemetery and microfilm (deeds, census, etc) records, plus broad coverage of all other topic areas. Vertical Family files.
Lebanon County | |||
Lebanon County Historical Society | Limited hours. Nice collection of local church and cemetery records. Vertical Family files.
Northumberland County
Northumberland Co. Historical Society | A visit is on my todo list... Limited hours.
Northumberland Co. Court House | I've only dealt with the Register of Wills folks by mail. They were very helpful and relatively prompt with the copying tasks.
Schuylkill County | |||
Historical Society of Schuylkill Co. | Very limited hours. I think the library has moved to a newer facility. The old one was pretty small, but had local church and cemetery records. Index card file.
York County | |||
York County Heritage Trust | An exceptional library, with historical coverage into surrounding counties. Very strong with church records and family histories. Highly indexed. Vertical family files.
York County Archives | After figuring out what you need at the Heritage Trust library, look at the real files and county record books. Helpful staff, even for orders by mail.
